All The Fuzzy Plot-Threads (a song for writers)

On Monday 20th July, I went to see They Might Be Giants perform at Rough Trade Records. I’ll blog about that properly in due course, but I mention it here for context. I’ve been listening to TMBG’s latest album, particularly this song:

It’s just so bouncy!

I’ve also been doing my rewrite of Sigyn – or rather, trying to. Let’s just say it could be going better.

These two factors have combined under the influence of tiredbrain into another one of my lyrical abominations. So, here’s a song for everyone currently working on a rewrite, with thanks to They Might Be Giants:

All The Fuzzy Plot-Threads
Begin again, begin again
Tie up the fuzzy plot-threads
Begin again, begin again
Why not start at the end?

Put your hands on your keyboard, caffeined and jumpy
Put yourself on a timer, get ready to write
Stay away from your email, from Facebook and Twitter
If you cave in and check them, you’ll be there all night

The dark side of writing
Is rewrites and edits take all of your time
It’s not that exciting
Just reading and tweaking, for line after line

Did you say out loud that you think you’ve lost the plot?
Man, you never knew the plot
All the fuzzy plot-threads are getting away
They’re going off at tangents and they’re getting away
All the fuzzy plot-threads are getting away

Your beloved hero is just not behaving
Your dialogue’s flat, and your subplot is dead
Enough contemplation – you need a direction
And some real motivation for these folks in your head

The dark side of writing
Is when you can’t finish, the story feels forced
Your deadline is biting
Your Imposter Syndrome is now reinforced

Did you say out loud that you think you’ve lost the plot?
Man, you never knew the plot
All the fuzzy plot-threads are getting away
They’re going off at tangents and they’re getting away
All the fuzzy plot-threads are getting away

Begin again, begin again
Tie up the fuzzy plot-threads
Begin again, begin again
Why not start at the end?
